Heartwood is brown or light reddish brown to dark reddish brown.
This type of figure results from distorted growth of fibers in the trunk of the tree that gives a wavy or curly appearance in the veneer which is quite rare and particularly strong when quarter cut.
Pommele denotes a large “blister” or “quilt” figure which is a result of abnormal growth of fibers in the trunk. To get the best pommele effect log has to be rotary cut.
It was widely used during Art deco period and in 1950/1960’s.

Karelian birch
Botanical name: Betula Alba Origin: North of Europe, East Finland, Karelia in Russia
It is a rare creamy white wood with contrasting brown flecks. It is rotary cut. It was used in Russian furniture in XVII- XIX centuries as well as in France during Art deco period and especially in 1950’s.
